Kaluti by Shazia Usman
Kaluti (a book) by Shazia Usman.
In her book, Shazia talks about how we tend to describe our own based on skin colour- Colourism. The story is about how a family member is able to use words such as Kaluti or kariaa (dark, black) to refer to a young child or to compare children. Parents often overlook/ignore when relatives or close family friends use such words that affect a child’s self-esteem and confidence. In this book, the parents of the protagonist not only confront their relatives but also reassures her that she is enough. Shazia describes how parents could respond to either situation– be it to correcting relatives or reinstalling confidence and self-esteem of a child questioning their appearance.
Growing up, I have been called, described or referred to with a word that is not pleasant at all and I sure you would have experienced the same at some point. This book is personal to me and it left me teary as I can relate to the story beautifully shared by Shazia Usman. I am also thankful to have wonderful parents that always made sure I knew and owned the way I am and that I am beautiful.
