Sigatoka Sand Dunes

Our dear friends Nina and Guillaume wanted to visit the sand dunes while they were working in Fiji. The other reason of course was that our Fiji 7s Rugby Team trained right here and won Olympic gold! So more reason to visit the sand dunes.

I grew up in Sigatoka so this place is not new to me or my husband. Except, as much as i love outdoorsy activities, hiking i find painful (because i am lazy like that). But, i am still a sport and will go ahead with a hike, when there is a fun group involved.

So we parked near the foot of the sand dunes in Kulukulu and immediately tried to race each other up. Of course i stopped mid way panting for breath and after a while my younger brother had to come tow me up.

So yeah as you can see above, once we were up that was it. So much happiness! ( I was still panting for breathe). No wonder our 7s Rugby team were super fit and winning gold!

The Sigatoka sand dunes spans over 650hectares and we now have an established National Heritage Park. The sand dunes are over 20-60m tall!

Once you are on top of the sand dunes, the views and walk towards the ocean is spectacular. As we walked towards the ocean, i was already dreading the hike back to where we started from. (Cue: lazy me).

Archaeological expeditions had discovered pottery and human remains here so this magnificent site holds many secrets and history.

You must take time out to visit the sand dunes one day! Pack a picnic with you and enjoy this while at the top. Also try to keep the sand out of your mouthful of bites when its windy LOL! Be sure to remove all rubbish or left over items with you.

It is not unusual to see kids from around the area run up and down the sand dunes! How i envy them and their stamina really! I think i have done my share of workout for a week at least!

Be sure to visit the National Heritage Center for more information and history about the Sand Dunes. You can read more about this here https://www.fiji.travel/us/activity/sigatoka-sand-dunes-national-park
