The Old Capital!

When i found out that i had to accompany the Hon Assistant Minister for Health Mrs Veena Bhatnagar to Levuka, i was EXCITED! Levuka, now known as Ovalau has been listed as a world heritage site, so for me, Levuka has always been on my list of places to visit.

I had never been there before and i was pleased to know that the boat across took a maximum of 40mins. I love travelling but if it involves a boat/ship then i am hesitant. I prefer short voyage time. Now if it were a cruise ship, that would have been another story!! ( I would still travel via boat regardless, because i am a travel freak!)

We stayed at the New Mavida Lodge which is located towards the hospital end of the town (I really cannot recall the exact street name-but it is the main street).

It is well kept and comfortable enough for a short stay. A very colonial feel to it and i loved it! The lady looking after this place is a tough one, but i can understand why, given that she has to run and keep the place in order. Once you realize that it is nothing against you, you will have no trouble getting along with her.

For lunch and dinner, you must give prior notice for them to prepare a meal.Except for breakfast which is a good plate of toast or cereal, egg, fruits and tea/coffee.

Anyway, i was eager to explore post work done and dusted. Fortunately we were given a tour of the Island and got to see some amazing sites. The town itself is very quaint and welcoming. You will see a lot of heritage sites and its so so cool. I love old buildings and architecture!

A visit to the Museum was necessary and i was eager to read more history about Levuka. Here, you will see that many old artifacts and images.

Another important site to visit was the Deed of Cession. This was signed on 10th October 1874 by Ratu Cakabau which meant making Fiji a British Colony.

To finish off my day, i decided to take a walk. A resident told me that there is 99 steps, that must be climbed, otherwise you have not been to Levuka! This was a to do for sure. And in no time, i was clambering up the stairs. Of course, kids were running up and down as if it was an easy task. Trust me it was not!

I was panting by the time i reached the top of course but the view was worth it. In fact, if it is breezy, you will also get a whiff of the tuna factory PAFCO.

Anyway, Levuka has so much to offer for a short stay. So if you have been putting a visit off, i suggest you go ahead and check it out over a weekend!

Below are some pictures of and around Levuka!
